I should’ve known something was off when Janet, my future mother-in-law, kept texting about my wedding dress, but always avoided shopping with me. I found my dream dress—a beautiful ivory gown—and when I told Janet, she demanded to see it in person. I refused, fearing it might get damaged. Two weeks later, I came home to find my dress missing. Mark had taken it to his mom’s, and when I saw it, it was ruined—torn lace, broken zipper, and stretched fabric.
Janet denied any wrongdoing, offering a zipper repair instead of compensation. When I confronted her, she laughed it off, so I took action. Mark’s sister, Rachel, shared photos of Janet trying on my dress, which I threatened to post unless Janet paid for the damage. Janet refused, so I shared the photos online, exposing her. The next morning, Janet demanded I take the post down, but I stood my ground.
In the end, I realized I deserved more than a man who wouldn’t stand up for me and a mother-in-law who disrespected my boundaries. I ended the engagement, leaving the ring on the table.
