I Planned to Reclaim My Father’s Inheritance That Was Left to a Stranger Until a Family Secret Changed Everything

My life was once ruled by rules. Every day, Loretta, my grandmother, reminded me of the proper way to behave. After my mother died, she took over raising me, making sure everything was perfect, from my grades to my napkin folding. It was exhausting but I always tried.

When my father died, Loretta became obsessed with controlling the family’s legacy. At the lawyer’s office, I learned I had a half-sister, Brenna, who was set to inherit everything. Loretta was furious, but I was left stunned. I had a sister I never knew about.

I visited Brenna’s house, unsure of what to expect, but she welcomed me warmly. Her simple life was nothing like mine—no rules, just her art and rituals. I spent a week there, slowly discovering that Brenna was kind and open-hearted. I even learned about a “gift” from my father, though it confused me.

Loretta’s calls grew increasingly demanding, trying to convince me to take control of the inheritance from Brenna. But as I spent more time with her, I started questioning everything. One day, Loretta showed up unannounced, and in the ensuing confrontation, I learned about the letters from Brenna’s mother. Loretta had kept them away from my father, destroying their relationship.

In the end, I chose Brenna. Loretta stormed off, and we began building a new life together—one that was messy, imperfect, but truly ours. For the first time, I wasn’t living by someone else’s rules.
