Two weeks ago, Jake suggested I pay all our bills to help him save for the future. At first, I thought it was a joke, but he was serious. He claimed it would allow him to save for a house, car, and kids, while I would cover rent, utilities, and groceries. I felt it was unfair, especially since I already handled most of the household chores.
Then, I got a call from a woman named Anna, who claimed to be Jake’s girlfriend. She accused me of being “clingy” and said I was stopping him from getting an apartment with her. I didn’t know whether to believe her, but after some digging, I found out she was telling the truth. Jake had been using me to fund his life with Anna.
I decided to turn the tables. I drained our joint savings and canceled the lease, pretending everything was fine. When Jake realized what I’d done, I informed him I was moving to a new place. He was shocked, and I walked out for good.
Two weeks later, I heard Jake was couch-surfing and Anna had dumped him. I felt free and relieved, finally able to focus on my own future without him.
