It happens when pores become clogged with excess oil and dead skin cells. This can form a plug, which may appear as a whitehead or blackhead, depending on whether it’s exposed to air. If bacteria get trapped, the immune system causes inflammation, leading to pimples. Severe cases can cause cysts beneath the skin. While acne is often linked to teenagers, it can affect anyone, with genetics playing a role in its development.
