While journaling at a café in Barcelona, I met Luis, whose Spanish accent and charm quickly sparked a whirlwind romance. After a year of long-distance love, he moved to the U.S., and we married, hoping to start a family. But years of unsuccessful attempts to conceive left me wondering if it was meant to be.
Luis’s parents were distant and cold, often speaking in Spanish, excluding me from conversations. I chalked it up to cultural differences—until a dinner with my friend Patricia changed everything. She overheard Luis’s parents mentioning his “real wife” in Spain. Shocked, Patricia whispered I needed to confront him.
Luis’s mother then revealed the truth: Luis had been married to Sofia in Spain for years and had two children with her. My marriage had been a lie. Furious, I demanded answers. Luis admitted to his deception, and I immediately kicked him out.
With help from Patricia, I reached out to Sofia, who was equally betrayed. We both filed lawsuits for bigamy and fraud. Luis lost his job, reputation, and both families. Sofia left him, taking full custody of their children.
Months later, Patricia and I raised a glass at the café where I first met Luis. “To new beginnings,” she said. “To karma,” I replied. “Revenge is best served cold.”
