Volodymyr Zelenskyy, once a comedian, became president of Ukraine in 2019. Since the war with Russia began in 2022, he’s become one of the world’s most recognized figures. Throughout this crisis, he has been supported by his wife, Olena Zelenska, who has worked to maintain a sense of normality for her country.
Olena, born in 1978 in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, met Volodymyr at university, and after eight years of dating, they married in 2003. Together, they have two children. Although neither anticipated Volodymyr would become president, Olena became a writer for his comedy series Servant of the People, which aired from 2015-2019.
When Volodymyr entered politics, Olena focused on children’s health and school nutrition reforms. As first lady, she championed healthier school meals and education about nutrition, inspired by her travels and research in countries like Japan.
When the war began, Olena chose to stay in Ukraine with their children, vowing to remain calm and strong. The couple has been separated due to safety concerns, but Olena believes their relationship is stronger than ever. Despite the strain of war, she remains committed to her duties, including advocating for the return of abducted Ukrainian children. Only 1,227 of the more than 19,000 children taken by Russia have been returned, with significant obstacles still in place.
Olena continues to work towards Ukraine’s recovery, emphasizing the importance of not allowing the aggressor to dictate peace talks.
