I stood in the bathroom, hands shaking, staring at the pregnancy test—two pink lines. I was pregnant.
I wanted to tell Ronald, but after so many disappointments, I needed confirmation. I scheduled an ultrasound, lying about a dental appointment.
At the hospital, the technician confirmed it—there was a heartbeat. I was going to be a mom. But in the hall, I saw Ronald with a very pregnant woman, and my heart sank.
I followed them to an unfamiliar house, where Ronald greeted her with tenderness. Inside, I learned she was his daughter, Anna, whom he’d just discovered he had after her mother passed away.
Instead of betrayal, I found family. In two months, I’d be a stepmother and grandmother, and in seven, a mom.
“Do you want to go baby shopping?” Anna asked. Family finds a way, even in unexpected forms.
