Will rarely spoke of his parents but once shared they kicked him out at 16 due to his younger brother’s heart condition. Though he understood their financial strain, they emotionally pushed him away, with his mom claiming he was “draining their capacity to care.”
Will worked through college alone, while his parents ignored him. “They’re obsessed with my brother,” he said. “I’m the IT director, but they treat me like nothing.”
After years of attempts, we invited them to our wedding, but they didn’t RSVP. To our surprise, they showed up, acting superior and insulting us.
Later, during our honeymoon, Will’s parents and brother arrived uninvited, claiming my parents sent the tickets, though it was clear they manipulated the situation. Will smiled and said, “What’s mine is yours.”
That night, he arranged for them to pay the full $50,000 bill. The next morning, they panicked, and we moved to a cheap motel. By afternoon, they were gone.
I later learned my parents unknowingly funded the trip, but Will wasn’t upset. “For the first time, I didn’t let them walk all over me,” he said.
On our last night, I asked if his parents would ever change. Will shook his head. “No, but I have. I’m not that scared 16-year-old anymore.” We smiled, knowing the best revenge was living well.
