“Despite our best efforts, we couldn’t save your wife. She’s gone, sir.”
Those words haunted David since the birth of his daughter. Grief-stricken over losing Joan, he couldn’t bring himself to bond with the baby. His mother stepped in to care for the child.
David, lost in sorrow, did the bare minimum. Eventually, his mother insisted he see a therapist, and over time, he began to heal. However, he still couldn’t bring himself to hold the baby.
One day, he finally worked up the courage to go through Joan’s belongings. In her hospital bag, he found her phone. After charging it, he discovered several messages, including one from Joan’s friend, Melissa, expressing her sadness over Joan’s death.
Among the messages, one stood out: “It’s a pity you sacrificed your life…” David was puzzled. Joan had died unexpectedly during childbirth, but Melissa’s message hinted at something more. Scrolling back, he found texts where Joan mentioned the doctors had warned her about high blood pressure and pre-eclampsia, suggesting she terminate the pregnancy. But Joan had refused, wanting to fulfill David’s dream of becoming a father, even at the risk of her own life.
Shocked and filled with guilt, David realized his wife had sacrificed everything for him. He hadn’t touched the baby since the hospital, but now he had to decide: Would he let his mother raise the child Joan had died to give him?
